Following the redesign of its newsroom and the establishment of a new Newsdesk, CNN Business has hired three editors and promoted a writer:
- Kelly Bourdet will join the staff as assistant managing editor for the Beat Teams, guiding coverage from the Tech, Media, Transportation, and Consumer sections; she starts May 4. Bourdet was most recently editor in chief of Gizmodo and while there launched Earther, G/O Media’s climate science-focused vertical, as well at The Gateway, Gizmodo’s first investigative podcast. Bourdet has also worked for Vocativ and Refinery29, where she founded the site’s health and technology verticals, and was a contributing writer and columnist at Vice’s Motherboard.
- Anjali Robins has joined the staff as the first consumer, food & retail editor, effective April 20. She comes from CNBC.com where she was a news editor. Prior to that Robins was a reporter at Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires covering topics from telecom to real estate.
- Michael Ballaban has joined CNN Business as transportation editor, overseeing coverage of airlines, autos, space and the travel industry. He was most recently interim editor in chief at Jalopnik, where he began as a weekend editor seven years ago. Ballaban was also the host of Car vs. America on Fusion TV.
- Sara O’Brien is now a senior writer, upped from a reporter. She has been with CNN Business since 2014 and has written many award-winning investigations into startups and big tech. She has also previously worked fro the New York Post.
Rory Carroll is the in-coming editor in chief of Jalopnik and begins his duties on May 4. He comes from Crain Communications where he served as managing director of Eleven55. Prior to that, he was with Autoweek where he was the publisher and executive editor for three years.
ABC Television Network has named Victoria Thompson executive editor of multiplatform projects. In her new role Thompson will oversee ABC News projects that will span podcast, nonfiction series and specials, and scripted forms that can be distributed across the Walt Disney TV group and streaming partners. Thompson was most recently a multiplatform senior producer in the Specialized Units and has been with ABC for 11 years.
Sam Shead is the new tech correspondent for CNBC based in London. He covers European technology with a focus on investigative and breaking news. Shead was most recently a staff writer at Forbes and before that has worked at Business Insider and Techworld.
