Nidhi Subbaraman has joined Nature in Washington, D.C., as senior reporter covering U.S. science policy, genetics, forensics, and biotech at large. She was most recently a science reporter for BuzzFeed News for four years, and before that covered science, tech and engineering in New England for the business desk at the Boston Globe.
The New York Times has named Ruth Maclean West Africa bureau chief based in Dakar. She comes from The Guardian where she spent the past three years as West Africa correspondent. Before West Africa, Maclean was based in Johannesburg for The Times of London, covering some of the biggest stories of the day, among them the death of Nelson Mandela.
Ana Colón is the new senior editor at Fashionista. She was previously the digital fashion editor for Glamour and before that covered fashion news and shopping for Reiefinery29 for three years. Colón has also had a brief sting at Bustle as a contributing celebrity writer.
Apple News has brought on Kia Makarechi as senior editor. She was previously the story editor and director for audience development for Vanity Fair in Los Angeles, and prior to that spent two years at HuffPost. Apple News is the aggregation app for iPhones and iPads that highlights breaking news from various partners like CNN, The New York Times, ESPN, The Washington Post, WIRED, TIME, National Geographic and BuzzFeed, and more.
Sarah Shadburne has joined Louisville Business First as a reporter covering manufacturing, logistics, the financial sector and bourbon. She comes from The Blue Banner, the UNC Asheville student newspaper where she served as editor in chief. Shadburne has also interned at WNC Magazine in North Carolina.
Xconomy, the online publication covering innovations in life sciences, biotech and technology industries, has hired Melissa Fassbender as editor. She was most recently the editor for Outsourcing-Pharma.com, where she organized and contributed daily content, while managing a correspondents and freelance writers. Prior to that, Fassbender worked for Advantage Business Media as editor.
Jason Place has joined WNTK-FM news radio in New London, New Hampshire, as a host of "First Look" airing weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m. He replaces Keith Hanson, who exited the station in October. Place is a veteran morning radio host and has previously worked for WXXK-FM country radio, and WMXR-WCFR in New Hampshire. He has also had stints in afternoons at WGXL-FM and overnights at classic rock WHDQ and news-talk WTSL-AM.
KOLD-TV, the CBS station in in Tucson, Arizona, has hired Jason Sillman is assistant news director. He was most recently a senior assignment editor for KING-TV in Seattle and had joined the station in 2017 as a digital producer. Prior to that, Sillman worked for KPNX-TV in Tucson as an assignment manager.
