Jose Del Real will return to the Washington Post to join National’s political enterprise and investigations team as a reporter. He starts Feb. 18. Del Real will focus on how policies affect marginalized communities as part of our 2020 campaign coverage. He returns to The Post after nearly three years at The New York Times, where he was based in New York before joining the Los Angeles bureau. During his previous stint at The Post, Del Real was part of the America desk and traveled to more than 40 states covering then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The Paris Review has named Mona Simpson as publisher. She is a bestselling novelist and author of six novels, and the recipient of numerous literary honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NEA award, and a Whiting Award. Simpson has been connected to The Paris Review for three decades and at one point served as a senior editor.
Jim Rich, the former editor of the New York Daily News, has been tapped as editor in chief of Deadspin and tasked with the relaunch of the sports site. Rich worked for the Daily News for more than a decade and ran the paper when it teamed up with Pro Publica to win a Pulitzer Prize for public service, awarded in April 2017. He also had a brief stint at the HuffPost as executive editor.
Newsy has hired Shira Tarlo as political reporter to cover the 2020 presidential race. She was most recently a reporter at Salon where she covered politics and policy for two years. Prior to that she interned at MSNBC. Tarlo has also frequently appeared on radio shows and TV programs to discuss and analyze the news of the day, including Cheddar, CBC and The Countdown 2018 with Larry Bensky.
Laura Waxmann is the new reporter for the San Francisco Business Times covering the Bay Area housing, land use and development. She comes from the San Francisco Examiner, where she covered education and community as a reporter for three years. Before that, Waxmann was a staff writer for Mission Loc@l.
The Tampa Bay Times has welcomed Romy Ellenbogen as a reporter and editorial fellow covering breaking news and healthcare. She spent the past six months as an investigative intern at the Miami Herald and wrote stories about criminal justice and inmate rights and acted as a watchdog reporter for the Florida Department of Corrections. Ellenbogen has also previously interned at The Palm Beach Post, the Metro desk of Tampa Bay Times, and at Rodale.
Melissa Repko has joined CNBC as a digital retail reporter focusing on big-box retailers like Walmart and Target. She comes from The Dallas Morning News, where she has worked since graduating college in 2010. While there, Repko covered a variety of local news and business beats including tech and innovation, with an emphasis on companies including AT&T and Uber.
The South Dakota Public Broadcasting Network has hired Seth Tupper as a reporter covering business and economics in the region. He spent the past six years at the Rapid City Journal in South Dakota as an enterprise reporter, and before that worked for The Daily Republic for more than a decade.
Cinthia Maldonado is the new multimedia journalist and bilingual news reporter for KBLR-TV, the Telemundo-owned station in Las Vegas. She was previously a KTNV-TV Action News reporter in Las Vegas for two years, and before that worked as an anchor/reporter for KRDO-TV /KRDO-AM/KRDO-FM in Colorado.
