TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. On TED.com, the organization is building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers. We find it an extraordinary resource for information on a huge variety of subjects, including marketing and PR. We thought we’d share a few of our favorites.
1) Renny Gleeson: “404, The Story of a Page Not Found”
The best PR pros in the world do one thing that others don’t. They find unexpected opportunities to create a greater connection between the public and their brand. 404 errors, for example are a fact of life, but as Gleeson explains, they are also a moment of potential value.
2) Sheena Iyengar: "How to Make Choosing Easier"
This is a personal favorite of mine because I am not a fan of the modern trend toward too many choices. (Do we really need Biscuits and Gravy potato chips?) In her talk, Sheena Iyengar shares research that reveals the consequences of offering people too many choices and explains how brands can grow by becoming more focused.
3) Seth Godin: "How to Get Your Ideas to Spread"
Seth Godin is one of the most important thought leaders in communications today. He has quite a few great TED talks. In this one he highlights the importance of having messages that are hyper-relevant to the audience and why mass media is losing its appeal.
4) Simon Sinek “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”
Simon Sinek is another great thinker in our field. This talk is a must see for PR pros who are thinking about how to tell the story of their brand. He contemplates how great leaders (whether they are organizations or people) inspire action. He advises that we stop talking so much about what we do and start talking more about why we do it.
5) Elizabeth Gilbert “Your Elusive Creative Genius”
Many people view creativity as a rare and special gift, but in this talk, Elizabeth Gilbert argues that creativity is a trait that exists in all of us. Success, she says is all about, “Just having the sheer human love and stubbornness to keep showing up.”
