Media Moves at Axios & NPR, Bustle Lays Off Some Staff in Prep for Site Relaunch in 2020

Axios has hired Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian as China reporter. She will also head up the outlet’s China newsletter and begins her duties on Dec. 2. She has previously covered foreign policy for the Daily Beast and has also written about international affairs and DC's foreign policy machine for Foreign Policy magazine. Allen-Ebrahimian is a sought-after speaker on Chinese influence operations and has given talks at Yale, Columbia, George Washington University, the German Marshall Fund, and Jamestown Foundation, among other places.

Kathryn Dill is the new early careers reporter for The Wall Street Journal covering the possibilities and changes facing young adults entering the workplace. She was most recently the senior work editor for CNBC Make It, and before that served as the careers editor for CNBC Digital. Dill has also worked for Forbes as chief of reporters.

NPR has brought on Manoush Zomorodi as a host of the “TED Radio Hour” series, replacing Guy Raz. Zomorodi is also the host of the "Zig Zag," "Note to Self," and "IRL" podcasts and will take over for Raz, who is stepping down after serving as the host since 2013. Her first episodes as host will air in the Spring.

Kennedy Rose has joined the Philadelphia Business Journal as a digital producer. She most recently the news editor for The Daily Orange, the independent student newspaper of Syracuse University. She has also previously interned at PBJ and its sister paper, the Albany Business Review.

Bustle, the flagship site under Bustle Digital Group, has slashed its staff, eliminating multiple editorial roles due to restructuring. Besides a handful of freelancers and contributors, the following full-time staff is no longer with the outlet:  

  • Emma Lord and Tanya Ghahremani, lifestyle editors.
  • Sage Young, movies editor.
  • Cristina Arreola, senior books editor.
  • Jamie Primeau, celebrities and entertainment news editor.
  • Kara McGrath, fashion and beauty executive editor.
  • Mallory Carra, associate entertainment editor.
  • Jack O'Keeffe and Leah Marilla Thomas, television writers.
