Media Moves at Business Insider & IGN, The New York Times Hires Style Reporter

Jess Testa has joined The New York Times Style section, where she reports on fashion. She comes from BuzzFeed where she started in 2012 on the breaking news desk. Before that, Testa handled breaking news at The Arizona Republic.

Business Insider has promoted Jennifer Ortakales to reporter and assistant editor for small business. She was previously an associate distribution editor for video at Business Insider and joined as an intern in April 2018. Ortakales has also spent a couple of years as a freelancer.

Shayna Jacobs has joined the Washington Post as a reporter covering the federal courts in New York. She is part of the national security team and is based in Manhattan. Jacobs has spent the last 10 years covering courts and criminal justice in New York City, most recently with the New York Daily News where she covered the NYPD and then the criminal courts in Manhattan. 

IGN has recruited Bo Moore as executive editor for technology. He was most recently the technology editor for PC Gamer. Moore has also spent several years as a freelance writer specializing in entertainment, culture, and technology topics. His articles were frequently published in WIRED, PC Gamer, Paste, Popular Mechanics, and others.

The Associated Press has announced a new hire in the Baghdad bureau and a promotion in Washington, D.C.:

  • Veteran journalist Samya Kullab has been named Iraq correspondent for The Associated Press. She has covered the Middle East since 2013 and most recently served as senior correspondent for Iraq Oil Report. Kullab has also worked as a freelance journalist covering migration, security and politics across the Middle East for several international news organizations.
  • Emily Swanson is taking on a new role as director of public opinion research. She joined AP five years ago as a news survey specialist. Before that, Swanson was the polling director at HuffPost.

Johny Fernandez has moved to New York and has joined WCBS-TV as a reporter. He comes from WFTV in Orlando, Florida where he spent the past two years as a general assignment reporter. Fernandez has also worked for WKMG-TV in Orlando and WHNT-TV in Huntsville, Alabama.

Chicago’s ABC affiliate, WLS-TV, has hired Samantha Chatman as a reporter covering consumer issues for the weekday morning newscast. She was previously a consumer reporter at KXAS-TV in Dallas, Texas, and before that worked as a business reporter at WDRB-TV in Louisville, Kentucky.
