Media Moves at Cleveland.com & NerdWallet, ESPN Radio in East St. Louis Announces Lineup Changes

Virginia Hughes will  join The New York Times June 22 as an editor in the Health and Science Department. She comes from BuzzFeed News, where she spent the past year as deputy editor in chief, after four years as its science editor. Before joining BuzzFeed, Hughes was a freelancer and wrote about genetics, neuroscience and medicine for National Geographic, Popular Science and other publications.

Following the recent announcement that Cleveland.com will produce all content for The Plain Dealer, Tim Warsinskey will become senior editor, special projects for Advance Local, the parent company of Advance Ohio and cleveland.com, as well as a group of more than 20 news websites and newspapers nationwide; he assumes his new duties on June 1. Warsinskey is currently the managing editor of The Plain Dealer and has been on staff since 2016.

Karen Gaudette Brewer will join NerdWallet as an editor in June. She is currently wrapping up her duties at REI, where she oversees brand stewardship and impact. Gaudette Brewer has also worked at The Seattle Times and The Press-Enterprise as a staff reporter, as well as at The Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal.

WXOS-FM radio, the ESPN affiliate in East St. Louis, Illinois, and broadcasting to the Greater St. Louis area, has announced a number of changes to its morning and mid-dway lineups:

  • Randy Karraker has moved to morning as a co-host of "Karraker & Smallmon," 7-10 a.m. weekdays. He was previously hosting afternoons and has been with the station since 2008.
  • Former midday co-host Anthony Stalter has replaced Karraker in afternoons on “The Fast Lane” alongside Brad Thompson and Chris Rongey.
  • Michelle Smallmon has also moved to mornings, co-hosting "The Bernie Miklasz Show."
  • Producer Brandon Kiley has become co-host of the 11 a.m. to  2 p.m. timeslot. He has been with WXOS-FM since 2016 as executive producer.

Tim Walker is the new general manager for WDAM-TV, the NBC station in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. For the past 15 years, he has led ABC affiliate WTOK in Meridian, Mississippi, and first joined the station in 1986 as production manager.
