Media Moves at the Detroit Free Press & Modern Retail, Laptop Magazine Names New Editor in Chief

Darcie Moran has joined the Detroit Free Press as a reporter and covers breaking news for the Freep Now team.  She was most recently an enterprise reporter covering southeast Michigan for MLive and co-hosted the “Crime Stories” podcast. Prior to that, Moran spent almost four years at The Ann Arbor News where she covered public safety, police and court issues in the Washtenaw County area.

Vanity Fair’s tech, business and politics vertical, The Hive, has hired Caleb Ecarma as a reporter based in Washington, D.C. He covers Donald Trump and "MAGA" culture. He comes from Mediaite where he has been a reporter since 2017, and before that worked for USA Toady as part of the editorial page team.

Jason Karaian has joined The New York Times as an editor of DealBook, the daily morning newsletter which connects the dots of the day’s most important news. Karaian spent the past six years at Quartz, most recently as global finance and economic editor. He also wrote and edited the Quartz Daily Brief newsletter. Prior to that, he spent 10 years at The Economist Group covering financial services, corporate finance and business.

Modern Retail has welcomed Gabriela Barkho as a reporter. She was previously a tech reporter at the Observer.com and covered tech, business, start-ups and everything Silicon Valley. Prior to that, she was a contributor at Crunchbase News, a tech reporter at Inverse.con, and a contributor at VICE Motherboard.

Sherri L. Smith is the new editor in chief of Laptop Magazine. She replaces Mark Spoonauer, who has moved into a different role within Future. Smith was promoted to the top editorial position after serving as the assistant managing editor since 2018.  She joined the staff as a writer in 2011 and before that worked as the editor of Purch.

Mark Spoonauer has a new role at Future and is now the global editor in chief for Tom’s Guide and the editorial director for TG, Laptop Magazine, Tom’s Hardware and AnandTech. He was most recently the top editor at Laptop Magazine and has also previously contributed to Inc. and Wired magazine.

The Adirondack Explorer has brought on Gwendolyn Craig as a reporter covering government, policy and the environment. She was most recently a reporter for The Post-Star in Glens Falls, New York, and covered environmental issues in the region. Prior to that, Craig was a news reporter for The Citizen in Auburn, New York.

Jennifer Trsinar is the new publisher for nFocus, the magazine covering the social and culture scene in Nashville, Tennessee. She comes from the Nashville Post, where she was most recently the director of market strategy. She has been with the paper since 2015 and before that worked for Destination Nashville.
