The New Yorker has announced the promotion of a staff writer and coverage change coverage for another:
- Doreen St. Félix has been promoted to television critic, upped from staff writer. Prior to joining The New Yorker in 2017 she was a culture writer at MTV News. St. Félix has also written for Times Magazine, New York, Vogue, The Fader, and Pitchfork. In 2016, she was named one of Forbes’s 30 Under 30 in Media.
- Emily Nussbaum has taken a leave to write a book and will return in 2021. She will then shift to writing essays and profiles for the New Yorker. She spent the past eight years as the television critic for the magazine.
Stuart Emmrich has joined Vogue as digital news editor. He comes from the Los Angeles Times where he served as assistant managing editor for lifestyle since 2018. Prior to that, he spent 15 years at The New York Times as styles editor.
Barron’s has hired Carleton English as a digital reporter. She was most recently a reporter for The Information and before that has covered hedge funds for the New York Post. English has also previously worked for The Street and CNBC.
Xiumei Dong is the new legal industry reporter for Law360 and covers legal news and issues. She comes from ALM Media where she served as business of law reporter and produced breaking news stories about leading law firms in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Prior to that, Dong worked as a technology reporter at MLex Market Insight.
The Detroit Free Press has promoted Jim Schaefer to senior news director covering auto, business and education. He has been with the outlet since 2000, mostly as an investigative reporter. Since 2017, Schaefer has served as an investigative editor and managed a team of investigative reporters. Prior to the Detroit Free Press, Schaefer spent four years at WXYZ-TV in Detroit as an investigative producer.
Shoshana Wodinsky has joined Gizmodo as a reporter covering investigations on ad targeting, data mining and consumer privacy. She spent the past ten months at Adweek as technology and platforms reporter, and before that served as editorial intern at NBC News.
Bloomberg News has moved Kriti Gupta to the Markets Live team as a reporter covering global financial markets. She was most recently a reporter covering equities, debt and energy for the news service and has been on staff since 2018. Prior to that, Gupta was a global public equities analyst for Third Bridge, and a producer at CBS News before that.
Sally Shin has joined NBC News as executive editor for business, tech and media coverage. She comes from CNBC in San Francisco where she served as the bureau chief since 2017. Prior to that, Shin was the senior producer for CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” and “Squawk Alley,” and helped launch the latter in 2014.
KTTV-KCOP, the Fox affiliate in Los Angeles, has hired Erica Hill-Rodriguez as news director. She was previously the news director at duo-play KCPQ-KZJO in Seattle and KRCW-TV in Portland, Oregon, before that. Hill-Rodriquez has previously worked for CBS as a filed producer for WBBM.
Tim Ryan has returned to KUSA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Denver, Colorado, this time as the news director of content. He spent the past two-and-a-half years at KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas as the news director, and before that spent 26 years at KUSA in various positions including assignment editor and eventually promoted to assistant news director.
